This chapter addresses women’s struggle for equality in the labour market. Women were initially marginalised as secondary workers, particularly if married, and paid a fraction of what men were paid, even for the same work. Assumptions of dependency, a focus on physical attractiveness, concerns about potential and actual pregnancy, as well as motherhood, all impacted women’s status as paid workers. The struggle for pay equity is shown to be ongoing but has recently received a boost with the passage of mandatory pay transparency. Of ongoing concern is the issue of how to balance caring responsibilities with paid work, together with the contentious issue of encouraging fathers to play a greater role in caring responsibilities. Particular attention is paid to critiquing anti-discrimination legislation and positive action as formal mechanisms for ensuring gender equality at work, together with the proscription of sexual harassment, which was recently given a boost by #MeToo.
