The internal market is the core of EU integration, a typical example of deep integration. It is based upon a customs union that guarantees complete free movement of goods between its members, as well as free movement of persons, services and capital. Free movement is granted amongst others through approximation of member states’ laws and regulations and common competition rules. Oversight by the Commission and judicial review by the CJEU are guaranteeing the effectiveness of those freedoms and rules. The internal market has an important external dimension as the customs union is accompanied by a common commercial policy, which is an exclusive competence of the EU.
