This book introduces the reader to the laws and policies affecting the rapid global growth of renewable energy resources. Renewable resources are not depleted when used to produce energy for useful purposes, or are replenished very quickly after their use. This book discusses resources including solar, wind, hydropower, wave and tidal power, geothermal and biomass.

The world has long relied on nature’s power as a fundamental energy source. Today, renewable energy is quickly becoming a more important resource around the globe. The world’s energy system is undergoing a dramatic transformation, moving away from fossil fuels toward reliance on cleaner energy sources. Some forecast that renewable energy will be the world’s dominant energy source in the near future. Many factors account for this rapid transformation. Technological innovations and rapidly declining costs of renewable energy system components, concerns that burning fossil fuels exacerbates climate change (and resulting commitments to decarbonize energy supplies), changing societal attitudes about fossil fuel use, and sustained investment in renewables all point to a far greater role for renewable energy in the world’s electricity and transportation systems.

Renewable energy resources can be used for electricity generation, for heating or cooling buildings, for cooking and for transportation fuels. Renewable energy systems vary widely, from small-scale installations such as residential rooftop solar panel arrays, to large utility-scale solar plants and wind farms.
